Husband and wife team Mark and Charlita Knox opened Crummy’s Cake Supply & Studio, Detroit’s only black-owned baking and cake decorating supply store located at 7114 W. Seven Mile Road, near the city ​​fashion avenue.

The new store offers a wide selection of high-end baking supplies, from toppings to specialty ingredients to decorating tools. From a variety of cake boards, cake drums, Masonite boards to cupcake containers, pastry wrapper inserts and cake boxes, Crummy’s Cake Supply & Studio stocks all the essentials a baker needs. need.

“If you’re a baker or pastry chef in the city of Detroit, whether you’re a home baker, a professional, or just a home baker, you have to go to the suburbs for your baking supplies,” Charlita says. Knox. “My husband, Mark, and I saw a unique opportunity to turn my passion for baking into a business and also be part of the exciting revitalization of Detroit’s historic fashion avenue.”

Charlita, a certified pastry chef and buttercream cake artist, and her husband quit their corporate banking jobs in late 2018 and opened several pop-up shops selling sweets and treats. Charlita soon realized that her true passion was designing and decorating unique bespoke cakes.

Discovering that there was nowhere in Detroit to buy baking supplies, Mark and Charlita decided to open their own bakery supply store. Charlita continues to create her custom cakes in the store’s commercial kitchen while Mark handles sales of cake supplies.

The Knoxes graduated from TechTown Detroit’s Retail Boot Camp, an intensive 12-week program that prepares serious entrepreneurs for opening their physical locations in Detroit.

The program curriculum is designed to strengthen businesses from the pop-up phase to the permanent location as they seek to thrive in today’s retail environment. Retail Boot Camp has earned a reputation for supporting the launch of successful businesses in neighborhood shopping districts.

Crummy’s Cake Supply & Studio will soon be offering a range of creative and educational on-site classes and demonstrations for anyone looking to develop their baking skills. Participants can learn everything from how to set up a kitchen to following recipes, measuring ingredients and mastering cooking techniques.

A ribbon cutting will take place on April 2 as part of a day-long celebration to commemorate the grand opening of the store. Attendees will receive a special discount on all store items and be introduced to new products and supplies. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for private baking lessons and network with local bakers and chefs.
