International Women’s Day: Women-Led Convey Law Board of Directors #BreakTheBias


The six female trustees on Convey Law’s board spoke about what International Women’s Day means to them and why they are so proud of their accomplishments.

More than 80% of Convey Law’s workforce are women, as are six of the nine directors on the board, making the company unusual to have a female-led board.

Director of Operations Jess Smith, Director of Training Sophia Ramzan, Director of Legal Laura Burkinshaw and Director Nikki Fuller, who are part of the training and leadership team, talk about their own paths to success and challenges they faced as well as valuable advice they received along the way and thoughts on how women can support each other.

Laura Burkinsshawwho recently joined Convey Law as Legal councilprevious generations who really struggled even to get into leadership positions”. She also advised: “You are always going to encounter obstacles, but we must learn to deal with those obstacles as we encounter them..”

Training Director Sophia Ramzan noted: “It’s a day to celebrate women, a day to celebrate diversity and a day to recognize the achievements of women in their daily lives..”

Nikki Fullerwho worked with Convey Law for 16 years and became a Board Director in 2019, said:It’s a time to celebrate the huge strides our ancestors took to help bring about a gender-equal world.”while Director of Operations Jess Smith said it was a “celebration of all the women in our lives, both in work and in our personal lives”.

The four also talked about their proudest personal and professional moments, Laura choosing membership in the Society of Licensed Conveyancers as a key professional achievement, Nikki choosing her CILEX fellowship and Sophia choosing her qualification as a lawyer and joining the board of directors. They also talked about the importance of supporting each other in the workplace. Jesse Smith noted: “We celebrate our successes together and we learn from each other in different ways and I think that goes for learning from our mistakes and flaws as well..”

General Counsel Laura Burkinshaw added: “At Convey Law, we support each other by listening to each other, helping each other, and sometimes just sitting down with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. Convey Law has a large number of women and it’s very nice to see that it’s very supportive.”
